The best summer ski area in europe

The Zermatt summer ski area is one of the most extensive in Europe. The skiing is in the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise area.

In May and June, the slopes at Trockener Steg are open. There is a chairlift and, while the snow stays, a T bar lift which access a blue run and two red runs. From July onwards, the full summer ski area opens at the top of the Klein Matterhorn cable car. You can ski from the top of the cable car down to the ski area which has three T bars accessing red runs and the snow park for freestyle skiers. Then there are two more T bars taking you back to the top of the Klein Matterhorn cable car. If there is enough snow, you can normally ski back to Trockener Steg in July.

In general, summer skiing is an activity for the mornings only. The snow changes from firm hardpack first thing in the morning to soft and slushy in the afternoon. The mountain closes at lunchtime and everyone makes their way back to the village on the lifts.

Summer skiing FAQ's

Where would I meet my instructor?

Your instructor will meet you at the bottom of the Matterhorn Express.

(If you know the ski area already and would like to meet somewhere else then get in touch.)

What can I expect to learn?

A complete beginner can normally expect to get to know the equipment, get comfortable sliding around on snow, control your speed and make some turns in a 3 hour lesson.

How do I get to the ski area?

From Zermatt, you take the Matterhorn Express lift to Trockener Steg. Then the Klein Matterhorn cable car will take you to the top.

The journey takes about 30-45 minutes. You should buy a ski pass for this journey.

Where can I rent the equipment?

There are many sports shops that rent out ski equipment. The most convenient is Dorsaz Sports at the bottom of the Matterhorn Express lift. If you rent equipment here, you don’t have to carry it around town to the ski lift. On request we can also offer a package including your equipment rental at our partner store Bayard Sports, including a taxi to the lift.

What should I wear?

You need to be ready for all sorts of weather when summer skiing. It can be lovely and warm even at 3800m, but you need to have clothing that is also suitable for high winds and sub zero temperatures. In addition to skis, poles and boots, you should also have waterproof / windproof jacket and pants, gloves, hat, sunglasses and / or goggles and high SPF sun cream. We would also recommend a ski helmet. Many shops (including Dorsaz Sports) rent out suitable ski clothing and also provide gloves and goggles.

As well as my lesson, what other costs should I think of?

The ski pass for a day costs 84chf (25% reduction for 16-19 year olds, 50% reduction for 9-15 years olds, under 9s go free). The cost of rental depends on the equipment you choose but expect approximately 65chf.
